Sam’s goal as a filmmaker is to provide a positive voice for the trans, genderqueer, androgynous & gender-fluid folks not yet represented on screen, documenting our history, serving as a call to action to be recognized and respected by society at large, and forcing our culture to evolve. Dating Sucks, while focusing on a sub-sub culture, is universally relatable because at its heart it is a search for love and oneself. By recognizing our similarities, Sam’s hope is that all people can find common ground for acceptance and understanding.
Dating Sucks: A Genderqueer Misadventure is an animated documentary thesis film by Sam Berliner, a genderqueer / trans recent MFA graduate from San Francisco State University. Sam’s previous films Genderbusters and Perception have screened at over 60 film festivals around the world and are distributed by CFMDC and Frameline Voices. Genderbusters won Best Short Film at Translations: the Seattle Transgender Film Festival, at which Sam is currently the Festival Director. Sam graduated from Smith College in 2005 with a BA in Film & Theatre, moved soon thereafter to the Bay Area to crew on a documentary film, and decided to never leave.
